Creating a Family Room that Brings People Together

We were inspired by a modern farmhouse look, which we achieved with soft white paint, dark accents, and carefully styled décor. Taking our room from light to dark required that we first primed the walls for a better paint application, so we chose KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer, which simplified the job thanks to its multipurpose formula.
It’s fast drying, water-based, and able to be used on multiple surfaces—such as plaster, drywall, wood, and brick. Great at blocking stains, it also has excellent adhesion, and is mildew resistant with a very mild odor. Once primed and dried, we got to work painting our accent walls and cubbies with BEHR® Interior Paint in Carbon N520-7. We also added this color to the inner window framing, to add a bit of depth, and to the beams across the ceiling to further complete the farmhouse look.
For contrast, we used BEHR® Interior Paint in two shades of white to brighten up the rest of the space. For the walls, we chose Shoelace OR-W13, and Ultra Pure White® for the trim and ceiling. The dark accents work to draw focus to the back wall—housing the fireplace and TV—and allowed us to situate the furniture in a way that creates a natural gathering space inside the room. From here, it was time to get creative and have fun with the décor.
Choosing a neutral color palette was an easy decision because it worked well with the existing brick detail and created an added layer of warmth. We wanted the room to feel relaxed and cozy, yet modern and sophisticated, which our beige couch and area rug help achieve. We brightened up the cubbies with a few wicker baskets, ceramic bowls, and vases, and sprinkled in a bit of greenery around the room. Our wooden coffee table pulls focus to the room’s center, while hints of blue and gray in the pillows and throw help to create a finished farmhouse look.

Patio Transformation to Kick Off the Summer

So don’t let another summer go by without transforming your outdoor living space into something fresh and vibrant. Cracks and splinters, stains, and mildew are sure signs your deck is ready for a new finish.
Follow along for step-by-step instructions to transform your deck into a beautiful space for you to enjoy all summer long.
Cleaning & Preparation: Before applying a new finish on your deck, be sure clean it to remove any trace of the old finish, stains, and mildew. After all, you don’t want tough stains like that old BBQ sauce Uncle Jim spilled last Labor Day to be there forever.
• Step 1: Use a wood stain and finish stripper to remove remnants of an old coating and follow it with a wood cleaner and brightener to neutralize the wood.
• Step 2: Rinse the surface thoroughly with a garden hose or a pressure washer. Pro tip, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24-inches away from the surface.
• Step 3: Allow the area to dry for 24 hours, and sand the surface to remove any remaining stray fibers.

PRO SPOTLIGHT: Make A Front Door Pop with Jared Foster
June 30, 2022With two little ones and running a carpentry business, free time is something that is not easy to come by, so I am always looking for ways to get quality work done more quickly around the house. Being a carpenter, you’d think that my home would always be in tip top shape, but sadly, my personal home is usually the last home I get any work done on. Turns out having two little boys running around means dirt, grime, and messiness can be a pretty normal part of everyday life. But my wife has been wanting to spruce up the front porch area a bit, since this is typically the first part of your home people will see.
We have this amazing porch swing that I built and we wanted to continue the theme of calm and relaxation as people approached our steps, so we decided to paint the door using Tidal, a navy color from Behr Paint, and Pasha Brown, a brown shade also made by Behr, for the trim. Before any painting got done, we needed to clean and prime the area to ensure the longevity of the paint and look. That’s why we chose KILZ 3® PREMIUM Interior and Exterior Primer. KILZ 3® PREMIUM Interior and Exterior Primer is a superior quality primer that offers excellent adhesion to both the surface and the topcoat. It dries fast, has a low odor and low VOC which makes it a great choice for a primer. The primer includes stain-blocking properties that block most medium-to-heavy stains caused by water, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker and grease which is essential when you have little ones.
The first step that I needed to take care of was pressure washing the front door and the areas around it to help loosen up and remove the gunk that built up over time. If you’re working with a time crunch, it’s best to utilize some shop rags or towels to soak up the excess water, as this can help speed up the drying process. Otherwise, you can simply let it air dry while you get other things done on your weekend to-do list. After the area dried, I laid down some painter’s paper to get the sanding done with less cleaning up on the backend. Sanding will even out all the old paint and remove any chipped pieces of paint on the door and the trim.
One thing I noticed is that whoever last painted the door to our home, didn’t utilize any primer, as it was really easy for some of the old paint to just peel off in chunks. Priming is a step worth taking, because it can help save time and money in the long run. Living in Atlanta means humid weather and using something like KILZ 3® Premium Interior and Exterior Primer would have helped keep this from happening over time, regardless of the weather conditions. Priming is fundamental for completing any paint project. It is the difference between a job done and a job done right.
After sanding, I just utilized a leaf blower to get the excess dust off the porch, any extra can just be wiped off. When my son came out onto the porch after his nap, he asked me “daddy, can I help you paint?” One of the aspects of doing projects from home that I enjoy most is being able to have my children join in. It reminds me of the times that I spent learning how to be handy around the house with my pops as a kid. I was able to get my son to help me put down more painter’s tape. This isn’t really a time saving hack, but it’s worth the few extra minutes to let him assist me, as much as a 2-year-old can. We put down more painter’s paper and tape on the trim, door, floor, and walls of the front of the house where we’d be spraying the paint to help save on clean up time.
I chose not to tape off the windows, because if I sprayed anything on the windows I could have quickly used a razor blade to scrape it off once it dried, which would give you a crisp clean finish and save time. Another way to save time would be by removing the door entirely. This would allow you to spray the door separately from the trim and not have to worry about taping anything off again.
Then it was time to prime the trim and the door. A huge benefit of using KILZ 3® Premium Interior and Exterior Primer is its thicker consistency and high hiding capability which is essential when painting over an existing color and converting from a dark or bold color to a lighter one. KILZ 3® Premium Interior and Exterior Primer is a powerful stain blocker and will block color bleed-through and other stains.
Once I laid on the primer and allowed it to dry, I was able to spray the door and trim using BEHR® paint, remove all the paper and tape and enjoy the new look. All and all, this project was completed in 48 hours and honestly, I was really looking forward to getting it done. Having used KILZ 3® PREMIUM Interior and Exterior Primer I knew this door color would pop, giving me Instagram-worthy photo finishes and people will feel even more welcomed when they visit!

May 26, 2022Let’s take a deep dive into the life of a professional painter, Daniel Ruiz. Daniel brings over 22 years of painting experience with the mission to enhance and beautify people’s ideas and help bring those ideas to fruition. His father was the jack of all trades that carried his skills from their hometown in Mexico to the states. As his family grew, so did their home and he enjoyed working side by side with his father, grabbing hammers, screwdrivers, nails, etc., to eventually completing a painting project. As a teenager, he was always intrigued by art on the freeways and later combined his love of street art with his painting skills for additional income. Here on the Perfect Finish, we are going to dive into a few questions with Daniel on how he gets the job done right.
What projects do you (Daniel) enjoy the most?
Most of my projects are residential projects on the interior and exterior of the home. I like changing personal spaces. Kitchens, bedrooms, I really feel like color helps change the atmosphere and the feel of a space. Could make them feel more at home or open the space and that makes them feel good which makes me feel good.
Why is a primer important and do you need to use a primer for every paint job?
Primer is the layer of protection that gives your paint a better base and grips to your paint as well as helps to bring out the true color of your paint. It is the best thing to do to make sure your job starts off with a clean canvas. Prime every time before you paint. Wash your walls, prime with a coat of primer and two coats of paint. This provides your wall with multiple coats of protection.

KILZ Primer is available, front and center, at most hardware stores. It is my go-to brand because it’s available, trustworthy, and I can rely on it for all my projects. It impacts my reputation that I can paint once and create long lasting coverage that speaks volumes to my customers.

It is all about the different textures. Sprayers will have the finest finish, rollers will leave the best texture for high traffic areas, and brush for smaller areas, touch-ups, and cutting in. Sometimes spraying in homes can be difficult due to over-spray and lingering odors. It is also the quickest method.

What general advice would you have for someone who has never done a DIY project?
1. Research – Most hardware stores have samples. Always pick up a few options and paint a section of the room. Get a feel for how the color works with the lighting in the space or the furniture in your home. The color may look nice in store but might not compliment the things you already own.
2. Be Prepared – Protect the space with drop cloths or plastic wrapping. Paint is like water and can get everywhere. Make sure you get everything out of the way and cover all the items you don’t want painted. A little bit of extra prep-work goes a long way.
3. Buying Product – In the past, I would always say go to the store and inspect everything in person, especially for first time DIYers. Since I am a professional painter, I know what types of tools I like to work with so I will order products online and while I wait for them to arrive, I use the time to do all my prep work. Masking the floor, covering the furniture, and putting all our drop cloths down in just the right place.

PRO SPOTLIGHT: ANGELA CACACE CREATES A SPACIOUS AND FRESH FEELING BATHROOM
May 19, 2022“How much do you think it will cost?” This is the first question a homeowner asks when I show up to their home for a consultation. This question is always a tricky one and oftentimes the deciding factor that can make or break a dream renovation boils down to material choices. This rings especially true for smaller rooms like bathrooms where the majority of a budget is allocated to what I like to call “big ticket items” like tile that are go-to for their moisture resistance. This can get pricey not only for the material but for labor as well. So if my clients are on a budget, finding creative ways to transform their space while not compromising on the integrity of their renovation is paramount.
So what do you cover a wall with when you don’t have a hefty budget for floor to ceiling tile? Paint! And although this hot pink bathroom had plenty of it, its previous teenage habitants had vacated and it was way overdue for a more finished and polished look. Using light and airy colors of Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® paint to make the bathroom feel fresh and bright is exactly the transformation it needed to feel more spacious. For the walls, Soft Linen provides a calming effect for this new space of refuge. The creamy neutral had a lot to stand up to against the hot pink so a primer was a must.
In order to properly prepare the walls, we used KILZ® Mold and Mildew Resistant Primer; not only for its hot pink covering ability but also, as it states in the name, it protects against the problems caused by moisture and humidity from steamy hot baths and showers and splash zones (if you’ve got little ones at home!). It does this with an EPA registered active ingredient that creates a mold and mildew-resistant film that protects against mold and mildew growth. And if you’ve ever been stuck in a small room with chemicals, you will appreciate its low odor, low VOC formula that makes for a safe and pleasant workspace.
In addition to transforming the wall color, we painted over the existing black vanity with Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® Trim, Door & Cabinetry Satin Paint. This water-based acrylic product is specifically designed for surfaces such as kitchen and bathroom cabinets, trim, window frames and doors. Its self-leveling, fast drying formula provides the hardness of a traditional oil-based paint but in an acrylic formula making it ideal for this bathroom vanity transformation. Silverado Sage is the new cabinet color and is a far cry from glossy black. Just like the walls, it needed some serious mold and mildew resistant primer film as well.
With our new selections of Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® paint and KILZ® primer ready to go, the bathroom walls and vanity were well on their way. But before we could experience the joy of covering up the hot pink and black palette with a clean slate, prep work had to be done.
For the walls, we began by removing the stickers and screws from old bath accessories. This scraping and pulling did some serious damage so to patch things up, we skim coated and filled in holes with spackle. Once dry, we took a fine grit sand block and smoothed over the surface, removing any excess clumps of paint as well. After sanding, we thoroughly cleaned the room, removing all dust and wiping the walls down with a damp cloth as well as soap and water in sticky areas that needed some additional scrubbing. Once dry, we applied the first coat of primer with a nylon/polyester brush and roller (3/8″ – 3/4″ nap). Although dry to the touch within a half hour, the primer needs a full hour before applying a second coat, which this hot pink definitely required!
To prepare the vanity for the primer, we removed all the doors and drawers and sanded the surface with 120 grit sandpaper to remove the gloss from the black paint to allow for the primer to adhere. After wiping clean and removing dust, once dry, we applied one coat of KILZ® Mold and Mildew Resistant Primer to the face frames and door and drawer faces.
With all the surfaces primed and ready for paint, we were ready for the new, bright and fresh color scheme. For the walls, we used a ½” nap roller to apply Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® Interior Paint in Satin finish. For the vanity, we used a high-quality nylon/polyester brush to apply Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® Trim Door and Cabinetry Paint in Satin finish. These quality paints were easy to apply and required minimal coats thanks to the blank slate provided by KILZ® primer.
With the addition of some fixture updates and soothing accents throughout the bathroom, the result is truly a transformation from dark, dated and dingy to bright, airy and fresh. And thanks to proper prep and quality products, even without a “big ticket” item like tile, these bathroom walls are well protected and we didn’t have to compromise on design.

A Home Office Designed for Focus and Productivity
April 12, 2022Working from home requires your full attention and focus, but with so many things around the house competing for your attention, it may feel impossible to tackle even the smallest items on your to-do list. Feeling overwhelmed may even be the reason you’ve put off designing a functional home office, but there’s no time like the present to get to work.
Your home office should be a dedicated workspace where you can distance yourself from distraction, confidently attend those virtual meetings, and really be productive. We hope this room makeover motivates you to finally get started creating a practical space in your home where you can go when you need to get things done.
Whether you’re renovating an old office or creating a space from scratch, it’s important to form a vision from the start. Our goal was to transform an outdated office from dark and stuffy to modern, bright, and airy, and because we knew we wanted fresh paint to help accomplish this, our first step was to find the best primer for the job. We chose KILZ Restoration® Interior Primer for a few reasons. Because we wanted to refresh a built-in shelving unit, as well as walls, we chose a multi-surface primer formulated for use on wood, drywall, plaster, brick and more. Since some older rooms can have their share of imperfections, we also love that this primer conceals tough stains and odors like a charm.
Before getting started, we prepped the room by cleaning all the surfaces we planned to prime. This is an important step, as smooth and clean surfaces ensure a perfect primer application and even better coat of paint. Sometimes old surfaces need quick sanding or scrub down, so if this applies to you, make sure everything is clean and dry before you begin priming. For rooms that may have suffered damage (smoke, fire, water, mold), you’ll need to address these problems beforehand, however, KILZ Restoration® Interior Primer is ideal for jobs of this kind thanks to its odor and stain blocking formula and thick consistency, which is great for filling in small cracks and splitting.
Because of the nature of the shelving unit in our home office, we chose to prime using both a brush for all those nooks and crannies and a roller for larger surface areas, like the walls. Once we evenly applied primer to all our surfaces, we let it dry—which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on the number of coats used and humidity in the room—and then prepared to paint. We wanted to create a statement with color, which is why we chose BEHR® Caribe PPU13-01 for the shelves, and BEHR® Ultra Pure White for the walls. This paint combo makes the walls appear brighter in contrast with the vibrant teal shelves, creating a sophisticated-casual vibe that is clean and current, and primed for productivity.
There’s already great light in this room thanks to its extra-large window, but our fresh white walls reflect the sunlight and considerably helped to brighten up the room. We chose a modern, asymmetrical desk to replace the more substantial, yet outdated one, and we added a light gray rug underneath to further cheer up the space. Other inspired, minimalist touches are seen in the standing lamp and shelving décor. This clean, contemporary vibe creates an atmosphere where you are free to focus for hours on end.
We’re so pleased with how this room came together, and how beautifully our paint came to life on two different surfaces. Achieving these clean and vibrant colors with a smooth matte finish would have been a much larger task had we not made the effort to prime first. The KILZ brand takes pride and deliberation when it comes to its paints and primers and the environment. Greg Williams, our Director of Product Marketing, shares how the KILZ team keeps the environment in mind when developing products for our business. “I’m passionate about protecting the environment as we only have one world, for us and future generations to come.,” Greg expresses, “It is our responsibility to protect our ecosystems, be good stewards of natural resources, and live in harmony with the world around us. We should all strive to minimize our personal impact on the environment.”
Ways you can paint with KILZ® products while helping you minimize your environmental impact.
1. When completing a painting project, choosing a high-quality coating such as a KILZ primer or paint will extend the lifespan of your project and reduce the frequency of re-painting.
2. KILZ products are designed with quality raw materials to provide optimal performance and service life. Also, they are manufactured in facilities where over 95% of liquid byproducts are repurposed and in 2021, 83% of refuse was recycled.

Why is it important to choose a high-quality product for my project?
• Primer and paint help provide protection for the substrates they are applied to, which can increase their lifetime. Achieving your result with fewer coats and reducing your need to re-paint as frequently will help minimize your overall environmental impact.
• Whether it be drywall or a more challenging substrate like bare metal, weathered wood, or a chalky paint surface, primer and paint can help to protect and extend their service life.
• KILZ primers have exceptional stain blocking properties and help achieve full hide by locking the stain molecules into the film. This results in fewer coats, material, and time required to complete the job.
What strides has KILZ made to develop products while keeping the environment in mind?
• KILZ has focused on developing high performing water-based products, with lower VOCs (volatile organic compounds), while maintaining performance attributes comparable to their oil-based counterparts. (Check out our post about Oil vs. Water based products here). All KILZ products are designed to meet national, state, and local VOC regulations, without compromising performance.
• Many of our products are GREENGUARD® Gold certified, including KILZ® PVA, KILZ 2®, KILZ® 3, KILZ® KITCHEN & BATH, KILZ KLEAR®, and KILZ RESTORATION® primers. GREENGUARD Gold certification confirms the certified products are low VOC and minimize impact on indoor air pollution levels.
• In addition to the liquid inside the can, we now use an all-plastic can which is made of recycled plastic and is 100% recyclable at recycling centers.
• We recycle and reuse many materials and byproducts during the manufacturing process. For example, in 2021 we recycled over 5.5 million pounds of plastic, metal, wood, paper and cardboard.
• We make it easy to determine the amount of product necessary for your project. It is important to use only the material that you need to minimize waste. We provide estimated coverage rates as well as a coverage calculator tool so you can purchase the appropriate quantities for your jobs.
What is the best way to dispose of cans and extra product?
• We would advise researching local paint disposal regulations. Many areas have local household hazardous waste drop off sites that will collect old and unwanted paint. In addition, more states are now joining PaintCare, which puts a focus on recycling paint, further reducing the impact of unused paint.
• Local charities may also be willing to accept unused paint in good condition as a donation.
