Updated Entryway with Sarah Berg of Brushstrokes & Timber
April 16, 2026
I’ve always believed a single wall can change the energy of a room, and sometimes that means ripping out what’s there and starting fresh. My latest project: the front entryway shocked followers when I tore out the old, 1990’s octagon shaped window, removed the old vertical shiplap, and covered the hand painted mural. But then, I redeemed myself when I revealed the new hand-painted mural and accent wall design, and the brand-new KILZ® Original Water-Based Primer played a starring role in this transformation. I’ve used KILZ primer on every single wooden accent wall I’ve built, so when the KILZ team reached out to me asking if I could try their latest product, I couldn’t wait to see how this one performed.
Before: What Was There & Why I Knew I Had to Change It

When I started, the octagon window didn’t speak to my style, and the vertical shiplap walls that had been installed just didn’t feel right. Four years ago, I’d painted a mural, which I loved at the time, but knew I wanted something different. Removing the shiplap and mural revealed more than I bargained for: dinged drywall, uneven surfaces, and a big ol’ hole made by a doorknob (because we never had a proper door stop) that I had completely forgotten about.
As with any good reveal, stripping everything away was therapeutic but also messy. That’s where the real work begins: surface prep.
Prepping the Surface: Sanding, Skim Coating, & Patching
Once the shiplap and window came out, what remained was a patchwork of damage. The old mural left bold stains, and the drywall needed smoothing. I sanded carefully to knock down bumps and feather edges, and then skim-coated to flatten out imperfections. For that door-knob hole, yep, it was sizable, I patched with drywall compound, let it cure, and sanded it flush.
It’s tedious, but this step is critical. A paint finish is only as good as what’s underneath.

Primer That Performs: Why I Chose KILZ® Original Water-Based Primer
Priming is nonnegotiable in my book. It ensures adhesion, hides stains, and gives a level playing field before the topcoat goes on. But I didn’t want to deal with the odor or mess of a typical oil-based primer. That’s why KILZ Original Water-Based Primer was the perfect match.
This new formula promises everything I love about KILZ Original Oil-Based Primer (heavy-duty stain blocking, smooth flow and leveling, excellent adhesion), but with water-based perks (low odor, low VOCs, and easy soap-and-water cleanup). It’s designed to block tough stains like water, smoke, nicotine, grease, and more. According to the product details, it dries fast (1 hour) and can be sanded after just 2 hours.
In short: heavy-duty performance, but gentler on your nose and your space.
Application & Results
I rolled and brushed the primer across all the repaired surfaces, paying special attention to areas that had been patched, previously painted with my mural colors, and where stains lingered.
What I loved:
• The primer leveled out nicely, hiding the transitions and blending the patched areas seamlessly.
• Even in those trouble spots, it blocked flash-through without any weirdness.
• After about two hours, I lightly sanded key areas to get a silky-smooth surface.
• Cleanup was so easy: brushes need soap and water, rinse, done.
By the time priming was complete, the walls were uniform, clean, and ready to receive the new design.

From Primer to Finish: Board & Batten, Mural & Trim
With the walls primed, I moved into the design phase. I built out new board and batten molding to add architectural interest and depth. I then painted a new floral mural, a vibe that feels fresh, inviting, and uniquely me. For the windowsill and trim, I also applied primer (to ensure adhesion) before my final coat of paint.
Because the primer had done its job so well, the finish coats glided on, looked rich, and masked any previous defects. The contrast between the crisp lines of the board & batten and the softness of the floral design gave the space a welcoming yet elevated feel.
The Reveal & Why It Matters

The octagon window is gone. The mural of old is gone. What remains is a space that’s my style, that’s functional, and that’s built to last. Plus, I have a window that I can open and close that we’ve already used several times during these crisp, Fall, Minnesota days.
This project reinforced two truths:
1. Surface prep and priming aren’t optional. They’re the foundation of every good paint job.
2. If you’re planning your own remodel, whether a hallway, bathroom, bedroom, or more, don’t skip the primer step. And if you want heavy-duty performance with water-based ease, this primer is worth a look.

Ask the Pro: Must-haves for 2022
January 28, 2022
New Year, new inspirations, and new projects! What better way to kick off the year than to share the “must-haves” for any project in 2022. We asked one of the KILZ experts, Paul Dambroso. Paul is the Vice President of Marketing at KILZ and shares over 20 years of experience. Here on the Perfect Finish, we are going to cover the top KILZ products that any professional may need to kick off a project.
Why is it important to use Primer for any project?
- Seal porous surfaces before painting to achieve a uniform finish in fewer coats of paint
- Block stains from bleeding through your topcoat finish (water stains, tannin, smoke)
- Improve adhesion between the surface and the topcoat paint (adhesion promoter)
- “Specialty primers” help solve a variety of problems in specific situations from preventing mold and mildew before painting, transparent finish primers for same color recoats, alkali-resistant primers for powdery surfaces, concrete, cement, and unpainted plaster, metal primers, and more.
What are the top 5 KILZ Primers you need to tackle any job?

- KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer (Previously KILZ 2 Latex) is a fast drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stain blocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, sealing properties and very mild odor. KILZ 2 ALL-PURPOSE Primer blocks medium stains including minor water stains, rust, grease, ink, pencil and felt marker. Enhanced hiding makes it ideal for changing colors and helps lessen the number of coats of paint required.

- KILZ RESTORATION™ Primer is a new generation water-based primer, sealer and stain blocker offering performance of traditional oil and shellac-based primers. It tackles tough stains including heavy water damage, rust, smoke, nicotine, grease, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker, pet stains and more.

- KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer is a water-based primer-sealer-stain blocker that is specially designed for residential surfaces in high humidity, moisture, and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms. It offers excellent adhesion to both interior and exterior surfaces and provides a sound anchor for paints. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) registered active ingredient creates a mold and mildew-resistant film that protects the primer film from mold and mildew growth.

4. KILZ Original Oil-Based Interior/ Exterior Primer
- KILZ® ORIGINAL has been a trusted brand for over 40 years! This interior and exterior primer is specially formulated to be a sound undercoat for paint and will help enhance the topcoat’s performance. It has excellent adhesion to both interior and exterior surfaces including masonry, metal, and excellent penetration for bare wood.

- KILZ® PVA DRYWALL PRIMER is designed for use on new drywall. It is a fast drying, interior water-based primer formulated to prime and seal new, uncoated drywall and reduce the number of topcoats required to achieve a uniform, professional quality finish.
What are some tips and tricks while using Kilz primer?
- Check out KILZ Coverage Calculator to determine how much paint is needed to start a project. Typically, a gallon of primer will cover up to 250-400 square feet of surface that depends on a variety of factors. Two coats are usually required to have bright or deep colors or stains that could bleed through the topcoat. If priming over light or white previously painted surfaces, one coat may be sufficient.
- Tint the primer with a small amount of colorant (paint) of the topcoat. This will enhance the accuracy of the topcoat’s true color.
- Lightly sand the surface before applying primer especially if there is a gloss or sheen on the surface. This will help the primer adhere better and result in a longer-lasting paint finish.
- Although today’s advanced chemistry allows compatibility between oil-based and water-based primers and topcoats, it is still best practice to keep the combinations of “oil-based over oil-based” and “water-based over water-based” to ensure optimal results.

Three Primers for Exterior Projects
August 11, 2020Priming before painting is an important step for nearly every painting project, and we’ve covered quite a few different project types here on The Perfect Finish – including priming when changing wall colors, priming before painting kitchen cabinets, and even priming in moisture prone rooms in your home. Now in the heat of summer, it’s time to talk about an area of the home we haven’t often covered – the outside!
Just as important as proper prep for your indoor painting projects, priming is a critical prep step for outdoor projects. From painting your front door, to the entire exterior of your house, or even a garden fence, KILZ has a primer made for the job. KILZ® Original Primer has been trusted by pros for over 40 years and the KILZ Original lineup includes a primer formulated for outdoor projects. KILZ® Original Interior | Exterior Primer is an all-weather sealer with excellent adhesion to even the toughest to paint surfaces like masonry or bare, porous wood. When using this primer on outdoor brick, stucco or plaster, it’s important to note that the masonry surfaces should be clean, dry and cured for at least 90 days.
KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer is another product formulated for both interior and exterior use. This water-based sealer and stain blocker would be an excellent choice for painting your front door or garden fence. Just remember this tip from the pros, if the surface you are painting is unpainted, exterior wood that has been exposed to sun and/or moisture longer than 2-4 weeks prior to painting – be sure to clean and sand it before priming. On new masonry surfaces, KILZ 2 All-Purpose can be used once the surfaces has cured for at least 30 days.
Our third pick for exterior projects is KILZ 3® Premium Primer. This fast drying, water-based primer provides excellent adhesion and a mildew resistant coating, making it ideal for exterior surfaces prone to moisture. It can be used for both interior and exterior projects and has a thicker, high-hiding formula great for blocking stains. If you live in a humid environment, KILZ 3 Premium Primer is a great choice for your outdoor painting projects.
