PRO SPOTLIGHT: MARK ROBERTSON COMPLETES CUSTOM BUILT-INS WITH KILZ®
August 28, 2024
Hi, I’m Mark The Builder! I am a woodworker, husband, father, and so much more. I enjoy creating projects and delivering beautiful carpentry to my clients and also for my own home. As a woodworking enthusiast, I take great satisfaction in crafting built-in structures. After purchasing our home, my wife and I planned a remodel to better fit our needs. We recently started renovating our formal dining room into an office, including a T-shaped desk that will serve as two L-shaped working areas for my wife and me. After finishing the first phase of the office built-in, we realized we had enough material to also complete a built-in for the mudroom area within the office. This addition provides extra storage and a designated area for our children to hang their backpacks, with drawers to put additional school supplies, shoes, toys, and more. There is also a wall plug that can serve as a charging station for our oldest son’s school Chromebook. As with previous built-ins projects, I used KILZ RESTORATION® Primer as a base before painting and KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL to ensure a flawless finish along the seams.

My wife and I chose BEHR® Sage Green ICC-77 with gold finishings to match our office built-in. And to top it off, no pun intended, we picked a white oak wood with a smoke stain finish, which perfectly matches the Sage Green paint and the desk tops. Our vision for the office is a sleek, modern feel. We plan to remove the arch in the walkway to install glass doors at the entrance of the office and close up the opening that leads to our kitchen.
In the garage, I set up my indoor painting area with stands and a drop cloth underneath. This is where I sanded and used KILZ RESTORATION® Primer on the upper and lower cabinetry, as well as on the doors. I applied two coats of primer using a paint sprayer for a smooth and even finish. After completing the cabinetry, I sanded and primed the slats for the mudroom built-in accent wall. I like to prime, sand, prime again, and sand the slats for a smooth foundation. Once the primer dried, with the help of the wind and my fans, I applied one coat of BEHR Sage Green, achieving a smooth, beautiful, and flawless finish. Then, it was time to put it all together in the office!
I installed the base by cutting the trim around the baseboard to fit it perfectly, making it look as though it was built into the house. I secured it with a wooden anchor behind the base, attaching it to the wall. After securing it, I added the oak wood top to create a bench for the kids to sit while putting on their shoes. Next, I assembled the accent wall and smoothed out the seams using the KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL before adding a coat of paint. Then, it was time to install the upper cabinetry before installing gold hooks.

I really enjoyed using KILZ RESTORATION® Primer as it is a versatile water-based primer, sealer, and stain blocker. It effectively tackles tough stains like heavy water damage, smoke, grease, crayons, pencil, and pet stains while sealing persistent odors. It can be used on interior surfaces including woodwork, plaster, brick, ceramic tile, and glass. The KILZ® PREMIUM SEAL was the perfect finishing touch to add to the pre-painting process as it offers great durability and stretch, even capable of sealing active leaks.

Overall, I’m happy we added this new addition to the office, which also provides an organized space for our kids to place their things. It blends perfectly with the rest of the space, and I couldn’t have done it without KILZ. I can’t wait until the rest of the office is complete!

Pro Spotlight: James Mansour Shows The Power of a Good Primer when Upcycling
June 30, 2023
My name is James Mansour, and I am the owner and operator of Mansour Valley Painting in Mesa, Arizona. I also go by The Arizona Painter online where I work to educate and share my love of painting, including the intricacies of the craft. With over 20 years of experience, my company specializes in exterior and interior painting while always emphasizing the importance of proper prep work. I am partnering with KILZ to highlight one of my favorite products, KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer. I chose a DIY upcycling project because I am a huge supporter of teaching my customers and online audience how to properly prepare surfaces for paint, and then use paint to completely transform an object or space.
I love the idea of upcycling. Not only does it allow you the freedom to create a unique accent for your living space, but it is also sustainable and environmentally friendly. Upcycling is a term used to describe the process of repurposing old, unwanted things into unique, creative, and new items. By choosing to upcycle I am also contributing to waste reduction, conservation of natural resources, and allowing myself an opportunity to innovate. I knew I had to find the perfect piece for this project, so I started by paying a visit to a few local Goodwill stores. After much deliberation, I found a wooden wine rack that my wife loved. It was the perfect size and shape for the dividing wall between our kitchen and living room. In order to kick this project off right, I would need the perfect primer. I chose KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer because it provides excellent adhesion, high-hide coverage, and excellent stain-blocking performance, making it the ideal primer for surfaces like wood.
Along with the KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer, I used the following supplies to get started: a scrubber pad, 220 and 320-grit sandpaper, latex gloves, drop cloths, and mineral spirits. As a helpful tip, be sure to properly follow the safety instructions listed on the product labels or online for the correct application and use of the products.

Setting up my workspace was the next step. I used two tables to hold each piece of the wine rack after the disassembling process. With a screw gun in hand, I broke the wine rack down into individual pieces. I then used 220 grit sandpaper to remove the current finish and wiped each piece clean with mineral spirits, preparing them for the first coat of primer. I used a small ½-inch thick roller nap to apply KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer. After allowing it to dry for only an hour, I lightly sanded all surfaces again and then was able to apply a second coat using the same size roller nap. Due to the mil thickness of the primer, it fills in the wood grain and any small scratches and imperfections in the wood, providing a perfectly smooth surface for paint application.
Since this piece will get used quite often, the superior adhesion provided by KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer will prevent the topcoat from scratching and chipping, ensuring a longer lifespan. After the surface was properly primed and restored, I allowed it to dry for 24 hours. Once completely dried I used 320 grit sandpaper to smooth down all surfaces in preparation for the topcoat. For this project, I decided to use BEHR PREMIUM™ Spray Paint in Black Satin for the main legs and shelf brackets. Then I used BEHR PREMIUM™ Spray Paint with a Hammered Finish in Dark Bronze on the shelves and wine racks to give the piece more visual interest with a two-toned finish.

Finally, after another 24 hours of drying time, the rack was ready to be reassembled. It is important to give this additional cure time to make sure the surface is completely dry, and all the products are working together to provide the sleek, durable, and long-lasting finish I hope to get. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly helps save time and money as KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer offers dependable and consistent results. Placing the piece in the perfect location on the divider wall, I felt I had achieved my desired outcome. It was another job done right with an Instagram-worthy finish, and a piece I can be proud of for years to come.
Thanks for joining me on another project,
James Mansour

Pro Spotlight: Update Bathroom Cabinets with Britney Mroczkowski of Build It Brit, Inc.
May 31, 2023
As a licensed general contractor and real estate investor, I know that priming is a fundamental step in completing any paint project. Without primer, paint may peel, crack or flake, resulting in a poor and unsatisfactory finish. And when it comes to achieving a flawless and Instagram-worthy finish, primer is absolutely essential. KILZ® Primers are a good choice as they offer consistent, dependable results.
Recently, I decided to do a quick weekend project to update my mom’s ensuite bathroom cabinets. The bathroom has beautiful solid wood cabinets but are a little outdated with a medium-to-dark wood finish. The bathroom has also not been renovated in over 20 years and needed a modern refresh. Painting the cabinets was the perfect solution to updating the space quickly while also making the room brighter.

Her primary suite is located on the second floor of the home overlooking a beautiful lake just outside Tampa, Florida. She has been in this home for over 35 years and raised our family here, so it was nice to be able to give back to our family home. To minimize the mess, I removed the cabinet drawers and doors and took them downstairs to the garage where I set up a workstation.
In the garage, I used a few drop cloths to make sure everything stayed clean and pristine. I set up two tables to create an “assembly line of painting,” where I would sand, prime, and paint. The cabinets were solid wood but had a lacquer finish that I wanted to make sure we could cover. To start the process and ensure a beautiful end result, I scuff sanded down all of the doors and drawers with 150-grit sandpaper and then did a final pass with 220-grit paper. Don’t forget to wear safety gear during this step, I made sure to wear a mask and eye protection.
After sanding, I was ready to prime! The primer that we used for this project was KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer. This primer is a water-based, primer-sealer-stain blocker that is specially designed for residential surfaces in high humidity, moisture, and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms, and laundry rooms.
KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer offers excellent adhesion to the surfaces of the bathroom cabinets, ensuring that the paint would stick and stay in place even with high moisture levels typical of bathrooms. Additionally, the EPA-registered active ingredient in this primer creates a mold and mildew-resistant film that protects the primer film from developing mold and mildew growth.
This was particularly important for this personal renovation project for my mom, as it would ensure that her bathroom cabinets would stay mold-resistant in the damp environment. The primer also helped us to achieve a smooth and flawless paint finish.
I applied one coat of KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer, allowing it to dry for 2 hours before moving on to the topcoat. We chose Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines® Cabinet and Trim Paint which I was excited to use for the first time. My mom looked at the color options online and choose the color “Emmie’s Room” which is a very light shade of green.

This very light green color complemented the existing white and green tiles in the bathroom perfectly, creating a cohesive and modern look. We applied two coats of the topcoat, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. The final result was stunning and transformed the old and dated bathroom cabinets into a fresh modern look and personally, I think it made the room look much larger.
Not only did this bathroom cabinet refresh make the room look brighter and more modernized, but it also saved my mom a significant amount of money compared to a complete bathroom renovation. When I finally let her come in to see the final results, she couldn’t believe it was the same cabinets. She told me they looked brand new and straight out of a home renovation TV show.

In conclusion, priming is a crucial step in any paint project, no matter how big or small. Not only does it set the foundation for a long-lasting and beautiful finish, but it also ensures that the paint adheres properly to the surface. KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer is an excellent choice for bathrooms and kitchens.
Overall, this project was a personal one for me, as it was a renovation for my mom, who has been my biggest supporter throughout my career. Recently, we started renovating a few investment houses together so it was an honor for her to ask me to work in our family home as well. With KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer and the right workspace, we were able to achieve a beautiful and modernized look for her bathroom cabinets.

Pro Spotlight: Renovate a Custom Home Bathroom and Office with Jason Pie
October 11, 2022
If I told you that paint was the most important finish in a home, you would think I’m crazy. Hi there, my name is Jason Pie. I am a contractor and a real estate developer in Los Angeles, California. I have been building homes for over 12 years. I have built over 150 custom homes, and I count the remodels I have been a part of. Here’s the thing, most people see the paint. You can’t really avoid it! It is on every wall, and it’s in every room. When remodeling a home, it’s important that this finish is done to a level that makes it feel like the home is brand new. My experience using KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer and KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer does just that. Not only does it provide a solid base for my new colors to be applied to, but it can also do so much more!
First off, let’s keep it simple and discuss what primer does. Primers are like the glue that adheres to the old paint and allows the new coat of paint to look its best and stay on for the long haul.

Here are some of the extra benefits to using KILZ® primer. It has a fast-drying agent in it that allows you to apply the primer and get to applying the color in minimal time. It is water-based, which helps with the odor and makes it easy to clean. KILZ® primer is also great for multi-surface primer-sealers. It can help block stains, it is mildew resistant, and has sealing properties along with a very mild odor, which all adds up to a win.
Now, let’s switch gears and talk about the primary bathroom for a moment. KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW primer is, in my most humble opinion, the best product I have seen on the market. Truthfully, I would use it on a whole house. Now, obviously, most moisture is hanging out in the bathrooms. But honestly, I am about to rave about this product, so if you don’t want to hear this, just jump down below.

KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW Primer has all the same great stuff as KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer, such as a water-based primer-sealer-stain blocker that is specially designed for residential surfaces. But here is the kicker and why I truly love this product. It is formulated for high humidity, moisture and temperature environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms. I cannot be alone in this… we have all had to YouTube how to remove mold from a bathroom. And if I am being honest, it’s not fun to do. You got to get all masked up with gloves on and get to scrubbing. Now this product does not promise that you If I can increase my chances of avoiding mold from growing in my kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and laundry rooms and any other room with high humidity, I am all for it!

The problem with most primers is that you never know if you can confidently depend on it. When you find a brand that does the job that you can consistently depend on, you begin to become loyal to that brand. You almost won’t use anything else! I’ve used so many bad products that have caused me to do 3 to even 8 coats of paint just to cover what was behind it. Having such an easy experience with KILZ® products, made it easy. I’ve been looking for the right brand that’s going to provide me with a consistent outcome. With KILZ 2® ALL-PURPOSE Primer, I have confidence that with every job I do, I will have success. One coat could have done the job, but in the bathroom, we used two, just to make sure. We are so impressed with how well KILZ® MOLD & MILDEW primer did its job.

Why is KILZ your go-to primer brand?
It’s one of those things, if it doesn’t fail, keep using it. And it’s been 13 years of my own business. We just don’t stop using it. The only thing I need to think about is, “Will they have enough at the store?”
Where do you use KILZ 2® All-Purpose Primer the most?
Exterior on barns and some historic homes that are wood. It almost feels like it amalgamates the wood and goes deeper than a super heavy-bodied primer. For interiors, one of the best uses is for breaking color, going from a deep color to a light color or vice versa.

How does KILZ 2 All-Purpose Primer spray?
So, because of its consistency, very well. Honestly, I would be perfectly comfortable with buying a five-gallon bucket, putting a sprayer in it and just spraying without straining, just because the chance of it clogging is going to be very, very small. But as a standard operating procedure, we strain all our coatings before spraying anyway.
How fast or slow should you move with a sprayer?
Spraying is filled with variables that are personal preferences. Knowing that nobody is going to use a wet mil thickness gauge: don’t get a sag and make sure you cover the surface. Somewhere in there lies the truth.

What sprayer settings would you recommend for KILZ 2 All-Purpose Primer?
The two main tips that we use are sort of double tipped tips where it goes through one orifice, atomizes it, and then hits another and atomizes it again. And those are magic tips. They produce the best efficiency, the least overspray, the best finishes you’ve ever seen in your life. Everybody always asks, what pressure do you put your sprayer? And the answer is super unsatisfying, most of my sprayers don’t have a dial indicator on them, so we actually don’t know what pressure it’s at, but if you spray and you get those kinds of little tails, or arms, or feet on the outside edges, you just bump the pressure up until they come in [to the main line] and you get a nice fan. And that’s it.

Ask the Pro: Primer Makes a Paint Job Better
April 19, 2021
It’s no secret that here on The Perfect Finish we’re advocates of proper prep work, and for us that conversation always includes priming before you paint. Primer can do a lot for your paint job, and the professionals know it’s worth the extra step.
To share all the reasons why and how primer makes your paint job better, and answer some often asked primer questions, we brought back Product Manager John Golamco. He’s been on the KILZ team for over six years and has a wealth of primer knowledge. Ready to learn more? Let’s get rolling!
Is primer only necessary when your paint does not have primer in it?
Applying primer is an essential prep step when you apply paint or a topcoat coating. As such, it is important to apply primer first and then (once it’s dry) apply the topcoat/paint over the primer coat. Primer is engineered differently from paint – primer has more resin/binder in the formula, which is the “sticky stuff” that helps with adhesion and other additives that give the primer its ability to solve a variety of problems. Paint, on the other hand, has more pigment in the formula in order to deliver color.
How does primer make my paint job more durable and long-lasting?
Primer helps the paint or topcoat stick to the surface better and prevent problems like peeling and cracking – ensuring the topcoat lasts longer on the surface. Depending on the type of primer (there are several types), it can solve a variety of surface related conditions and problems that could ruin your topcoat paint if you didn’t apply primer first. Primers can evenly and uniformly seal porous surfaces; hide previous colors or marks and stains; block and seal in bleeding stains (like tannin, grease, nicotine, water stains… just to name a few!); seal in unwanted odors; enhance adhesion and help bond the paint/topcoat to the surface; and prevent mold or mildew on the primer film surface, and other special features. There are even primers formulated for different spaces in the home, like KILZ Kitchen & Bath Primer.
How many coats of primer do I need?
Typically, you only have to apply one or two coats of primer to achieve optimal results for which it is intended. One common misconception is that you need to continue to apply coats of primer until you completely cover the surface in a white finish or hide every area possible like you would do a paint. It is not the primers job to provide the final complete paint finish – that’s the paint’s job. Even if it doesn’t look completely covered, one or two coats is all you need as long as it is evenly applied. For blocking water stains or tannin from a “fresh” red wood surface, more premium stain blocking primer is recommended.
Does primer work on all previous paint sheens?
Just like most things you can buy, there are different types of primers ranging from the simpler ones that are made to just seal porous surfaces to the more sophisticated ones that offer additional features and benefits. Typically, the higher performing, more premium primers have better adhesion performance that allows it to stick to more surface types. Typically, the denser/harder the surface and the more sheen (higher gloss), the more difficult it is for paint or primer to adhere to. We recommend using high adhesion bonding primers for dense, glossy surfaces. Sometimes it is also necessary to perform a light sanding of the surface to help the primer bond to it. A high-performance primer such as KILZ 3® Premium Primer or KILZ® Restoration Primer will work with most paint sheens.
Can I apply primer on wallpaper?
When it comes to painting over old wallpaper, the best practice is to remove it completely, remove any old wallpaper glue and dirt residue, ensure the surface is clean and smooth and then apply primer and then topcoat with new paint. However, if painting over old wallpaper is needed, we recommend ensuring the old wallpaper is not peeling and adhesion to the wall is still sound. Then use an oil base primer such as KILZ® Original Primer to prime the surface before applying paint. Using an oil base primer will make sure there is less chance the adhesive of the wallpaper (which may be exposed at the seams) is compromised.
Is there a primer with a clear finish?
Most primers will adhere to wood however there are special primers that will apply in a clear transparent finish. We recommend KILZ KLEAR® Clear Sealer & Bonding Primer – a high performance fast-drying, multi-surface clear primer developed to seal highly porous surfaces inside and outside your home. It is also recommended for use when painting the same topcoat paint color on top of an existing paint coat.
Can primer be applied to peeling paint?
Applying primer or any additional topcoat coating to already peeling paint is not recommended. The adhesion or bonding of the paint to the surface is already compromised. Adding more layers of primer or any coating will add weight to the compromised paint and might cause it to peel off completely. We recommend removing the peeling paint and starting fresh with a clean surface.
