New Look, Same Trusted Formula! KILZ 2® GRAY Primer is a fast drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stainblocker which is best used under dark, rich and deep vibrant color topcoats. This helps achieve more accurate color with fewer coats of paint and also improves hiding of previous colors. KILZ 2 GRAY Primer has excellent adhesion, sealing properties and a very mild odor. Effectively blocks “light to medium” stains including water stains, rust, grease, ink, pencil and felt marker. Use on interior and exterior surfaces including woodwork, drywall, plaster, paneling, masonry, brick, painted metal and properly prepared glossy surfaces. Use under or over water-based or oil-based paints. Not recommended on flooring.

KILZ 2® GRAY Interior | Exterior Primer is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The gray primer by Kilz is the best! We purchased a home and been doing room by room. Our 1st room: the front room was painted apple red. Also the previous owners painted Red-Apple over a brick fireplace. We had no other choice but to repaint it. At the store: Kilz gray primer was highly recommend so we purchased 2 gallons. My wife had an out of town emergency so I wanted to suprise her. I only needed 1 coat of primer which I was very surprised but it covered beautiful. Then I painted with 2 coats of paint. I probably could have only used 1. It covered the bricks: which are now a off white: you could never tell just how red it was. Since then we have moved into the dining room. Now after stripping out the wall paper & repairing the walls: my wife purchased the same Kilz in gray. She said it's the best. Doubt will ever use anything else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from IT DOES THE JOB AND DOES IT WELL!! I tried the Kilz 2 gray for the first time about a year ago and I can tell you that it has been a game changer for me.I revamp furniture on the regular so I have tried several different brands and this one is the best.It gives full coverage,it sticks to the surface and it locks that old odor that some old furniture have.Stains blockage is very good as well but not perfect ,it took 2 coats to keep the cherry oak stain from seeping through. I had to give it full stars cause it did what I wanted and most importantly it did what it said it would.

Surface Preparation

The following steps are recommended for product performance.

  • All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold and mildew, loose peeling paint, rust and all other foreign substances.
  • If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well and allow to dry.
  • Unpainted, exterior wood exposed to sun and/or moisture longer than 2-4 weeks must be cleaned and sanded before priming.
  • Glossy Surfaces: For maximum adhesion, scuff sand the surface thoroughly before priming.*
  • Peeling or Checked Paint: Scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface.*
  • Mold or Mildew Covered Surfaces: Wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water and allow to dry before priming.
  • Masonry, Brick, Stucco and Plaster: KILZ 2 GRAY Primer may be used on clean, dry, aged masonry surfaces. New masonry must be allowed to cure (dry) at least 30 days before applying KILZ 2 GRAY Primer.
  • Fire Restoration: It is critical to clean damaged surfaces thoroughly before priming. Primer recommendations: Water-based primers such as KILZ® RESTORATION or oil-based primers such as KILZ® ORIGINAL (interior use) or KILZ® ORIGINAL EXTERIOR.
