Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great The only stripper I've used is a sander so no previous experience with this type product. I used this on an older deck with an oil-based stain. I did railings, spindles and all. This made it a little time consuming to apply as you can't spray it on due to the thickness. The fact that it's thick helped with dripping which was a plus for me. You have to mist it to keep it wet while it works, also. I worked in sections over several days to avoid the sun. Anyway, a lot of the old stain just rinsed off with the water hose nozzle. I went over it with a nylon brush to get what stain was left and wood fibers, too. Followed up with cleaner/brightener, old wood looks good.

The following steps and products are required.

  • Be sure to have a source for water, hose with nozzle and stiff bristle broom or brush and a neutralizer/conditioner such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener.

  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces.

  • Dampen nearby foliage with water and cover with plastic drop cloths.

  • Wear protective clothing, goggles, acid resistant gloves, and NIOSH-approved respirator.

  • Conduct a small test patch in an inconspicuous area to ensure product performance.

  • Prevent all rinse solution from entering storm drains.

  • For best results, apply when air and surface temperatures are between 40-90˚F.

  • Pour KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper directly onto surface and apply liberally using a nylon/polyester brush or roller. Natural bristle brushes or lambswool applicators are not recommended.

  • DO NOT USE PUMP SPRAYER. Due to product thickness, paint or other sprayers will clog tip.

  • Always keep surface wet by misting with water and re-apply product if drying occurs.

  • Finish will begin to lift from the surface. Repeat process as needed to keep the surface wet during the removal period. Most deteriorated finishes will start to lift after about 5-45 minutes. When the finish starts to lift, scrub the surface using a stiff bristle broom or brush.

  • Rinse thoroughly with water from garden hose using nozzle at normal pressure, or use a pressure washer at a low setting 500-1200 PSI. DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE as this may harm the wood. If some of the old finish remains on the surface, repeat application procedure or spot sand as needed.

  • Follow up with a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener to remove stains, rejuvenate natural wood color and to neutralize the stripping action.

  • COVERAGE: 50-150 sq. ft.

WARNING! Sanding or scraping pressure treated lumber may be hazardous; wear appropriate protection.

Dry Time

Surfaces must be thoroughly dry before applying any type of new finish, except those finishes that can be applied to dampened wood. Allow the wood to dry for a minimum of 24 hours in warm, dry weather.

Clean up & Disposal

  • Clean equipment with warm, soapy water. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent. Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused product in accordance with all current governmental regulations.

  • Do not dispose of this product down a drain. For recycling or disposal information contact your local household refuse collection service.

Cautions / Limitations

  • Protect from freezing

  • For best results, apply at temperatures between 50°F - 90°F. Temperatures above 90°F may affect the application such as drying too fast. Avoid applying in direct sun. NOTE: If the surface is hot to the touch it should be considered too hot to apply this coating.

  • Avoid heavy traffic for 24 hours.

  • CAUTION: Surfaces may become slippery when wet. Use caution when walking on surface when moisture is present.

  • Shelf life under normal conditions is two years unopened.
