Preparation

The following steps and products are required.

  • For failing coatings or to remove loose wood fibers, use a product such as KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper followed by a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener to neutralize the wood.

  • When KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper is not needed, a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener MUST be used to remove mill glaze and clean the wood surface. After using either KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper or KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer.

  • When rinsing with a pressure washer, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24" away from the surface.

  • Allow the area to dry at least 24 hours before coating. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz.

Application

  • (For best results, a pad applicator is recommended over large deck areas.) Must apply between 40-90° F.

  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or to hot surfaces. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours. The surface must be completely dry before application.

  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. Stir product occasionally throughout application. Test product for penetration and color on a small hidden area before proceeding.

  • Use a nylon/polyester brush for areas requiring more accuracy. Use of rollers should be limited to rough surfaces only. Use 3/8" nap or longer when appropriate.

  • A high quality pump sprayer with a variable tip or an airless sprayer with a .015"-.019" tip (60 mesh filter) may be used. Work in small sections lightly saturating the surface and immediately back-brush or use pad applicator to eliminate puddling, remove excess and evenly distribute the stain.

  • Maintain a wet edge when applying. Apply product end-to-end or to board lengths to prevent lap marks. Over application of stain will lead to surface failure including peeling and cracking.

  • Avoid applying stain too heavily. Two thin coats required. For optimum performance, coat all accessible sides.

  • COVERAGE: 1st Coat 250-300 Sq. Ft. ; 2nd Coat 500-600 Sq. Ft.

Dry Time

  • Wait 1-2 hours before recoating. Fully cured coating can be washed after 72 hours.

  • Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.

Clean up & Disposal

  • Clean equipment and paint spatters with warm, soapy water. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent.

  • Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused product in accordance with all current governmental regulations.
