Preparation

The following steps and products are required.

  • To remove loose and failing coatings or wood fibers, use a wood stain & finish stripper followed by a wood cleaner & brightener to neutralize the wood.

  • When stripping is not needed, the surface MUST be prepared with a wood cleaner to remove mill glaze and clean the wood surface.

  • After using a stripper or cleaner & brightener, rinse the surface thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer. When rinsing with a pressure washer, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24" away from the surface

  • Allow the area to dry at least 24 hours before coating.

  • If needed, lightly sand to remove any wood fibers/fuzz

A quality product that contains a mildewcide will assist in providing a mildewresistant finish, provided that all existing mildew is removed prior to application. While this product does contain mildewcide, it will not prevent mildew growth.

Application

  • For best results, a pad applicator is recommended over large deck areas. Must apply between 40-90° F.

  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or to hot surfaces. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours. The surface must be completely dry before application.

  • Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. DO NOT THIN PRODUCT. Stir product occasionally throughout application. Test product for penetration and color on a small hidden area before proceeding.

  • Use a nylon/polyester brush for areas requiring more accuracy. Use of rollers should be limited to rough surfaces only. Use 3/8" nap or longer when appropriate.

  • A high quality pump sprayer with a variable tip or an airless sprayer with a .015"-.019" tip (60 mesh filter) may be used. Work in small sections lightly saturating the surface and immediately back-brush or use pad applicator to eliminate puddling, remove excess and evenly distribute the stain.

  • Maintain a wet edge when applying. Apply product end-to-end or to board lengths to prevent lap marks. Over application of stain will lead to surface failure including peeling and cracking.

  • Avoid applying stain too heavily. Two thin coats required. For optimum performance, coat all accessible sides.

COVERAGE: 1st Coat 250-300 Sq. Ft.; 2nd Coat 500-600 Sq. Ft.

Application Methods

  • Nylon/polyester brush (for edges, corners and in between boards).

  • 1/4" - 1/2" nap roller. For smoother textures, use shorter nap.

  • For nail holes and cracks up to 1/4, completely fill in with KILZ OVER ARMOR coating using a nylon/polyester brush and allow to dry prior to rolling. Deep nail holes and cracks may require additional filling.

  • Use pressure while rolling and apply generously.

Dry Time

  • Wait 1-2 hours before recoating. Fully cured coating can be washed after 72 hours.

  • Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity.

Clean-Up & Disposal

  • Clean equipment and paint spatters with warm, soapy water. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent.
