Rated 2 out of 5 by from It is thick I just brought this excited about painting my deck and fence but it is super thick. I am not sure if I needed to mix it but it a full workout. I could only finish a small section and it would not roll out with the roller.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Product! I bought this product for our 12x12 deck. This product is so thick it can’t be applied by a roller but yet doesn’t cover. We had to apply it with a brush and PUTTY KNIFE!!! Plus the amount you “think” you need is no where what you need using this stuff. You better purchase triple the amount. You lose more product from drying in the can and paint pan than you ever get to use. And we painted in 60 degree weather. I would NOT recommend this product even to my worst enemy! It’s needs removed from the market!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent deck paint This is probably the best product I've ever used. I recovered a deck and the Textron it was so strong it held up to all the weather. If a very big rainy season with hail and nothing damaged it been going strong now for a long time. I believe the thickness of it is it secret to its strength. I would recommend this to anybody who would like to keep their deck in good shape.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Extremely thick I bought this product for my deck. The color is beautiful but it was so think I had to scoop it out with a paint stick and then it wouldn't roll out at all. I made it work but it was the worst experience ever.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Trash trash trash Bought it. Waited for a nice day. Prepared the surface (outdoor patio). Open the can and, like many of the reviews I'm seeing here, it's sludge. No amount of stiring will make it spreadable. Complete waste of money. I'm sad. (Tried a brush and a roller, just clumps up immediately and doesn't spread). Possible the can I got was old/defective. But still trash to me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Way too thick to spread We bought 2 gallons of this to cover one small deck. Wasted at least 1/2 of it because it doesn’t spread well AT ALL....literally tried rollers and multiple brushes and none of them worked. It does dry amazingly fast, which is amazing, BUT if you go back to touch up spots it clumps up and all of it peels up. Terribly hard to use and way too thick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from To thick to use as directed Paint did not spread at all with brush or roller. I have no clue why they would sell a product that spreads so poorly. Temp today is 72 and I’m working in the sun.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grey We bought this at the end of summer last year and used it to make over a 2 tier deck..I am super happy with the product! However, I cant find the grey anywhere now, not even online anywhere..did you discontinue the grey? I need a couple more gallons to finish the underneath! I would have never thought I would start such an enormous project and not be able to complete it..please advise where the grey can be found .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inconsistent quailty Like many reviews I have 2 cabs one is like sledge even after trying to mix really well and the other is like a thick paint. No way you can even use a brush or roller with the first can.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from inconsistent product- will buy something else first can was ok - consistency of thick paint and could be brushed on - 2nd gallon was so thick - could not stir it - ended up troweling it on to last 5 deck steps- took 1/2 gallon to do last 5 steps - will return 3rd gallon I bought and select another product for my concrete painting job - I have the lot numbers from the top of the cans if anyone is interested

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I bought a gallon of this from walmart and alls i can say is yes it is very thick but once its applied it looks amazing and is very durable, you do have to work at a good pace but i would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a durable and great coating on their deck..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Super Thick I purchased 14 cans for my deck. When I opened it to check the color with the deck I can see it’s very thick and doesn’t pour. I was wondering if other people add water? I can’t start painting for a couple of months and maybe if I add water now it’ll be normal by May?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 10 gallons now sent back I've personally purchased two gallons for home use and it was great. I then purchased 3 gallons of grey that was like clay that had to be exchanged followed by 4 gallons of brown that was also like clay. The 3 exchanged were all like clay and have to go back and I'm expecting the other 4 gallons of brown they're exchanging to be the same way. Total garbage and because it's shipped we've wasted 3 weeks! 3 WEEKS because of garbage paint

Rated 1 out of 5 by from To thick to use I just purchased this for our ramp to our house. It is impossible to use. It is to thick to even get out of the can. I tried to stir it, but was unable to. I even dipped some of it out of the can to see if I could get it stirred up. Will be taking this back for a refund. Would not recommend unless they can resolve the problem.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Many cans too thick to spread We have 550 sq ft deck and chose this product to use because it have good reviews and we have had great experience with other Kilz products. Of the 10 can we have purchased so far, only 4 of these have presented us with a usable product. The other 6 are thick as clay!! Of the first three we purchased, two were usable. Mind you, the product is quite thick even in the “good” cans, so we knew very early into the project that we would need more than originally estimated. We were able to spread it with a 4 inch paint brush. However, the third can was like clay and unusable. We went back to the same merchant to purchase more product and again, 2 out of 3 can were usable product. On the next round, our original merchant was out of stock, so we ordered online from a different seller: 4 cans, all thick as tar. We cannot spread with a brush, roller, or even a trowel. Something must be wrong with production or the stabilizers in this product because we know that some of it was good and what we have done of our deck looks excellent. However, we still have about a 20% of our deck left unpainted and are desperately frustrated at this point. I would unfortunately not recommend this product due to the inconsistency of quality upon opening.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sludge! I put the first coat of this son my porch floor today. I used a trowel for the entire job. Does not pour out of the can like in the video. Impossible to stir with ordinary wooden paint stir sticks. No mention of stirring Kong the can. Instructions say it can’t be cut with water or anything else. How do I get the second coat to pour out of the can Kilz?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware I should’ve listened to the other reviews. The product seems to be great, but you CAN NOT spread this with a roller. A squeegee would’ve worked great but I was forced to use a paint stick. On my hands and knees spreading the product with a paint stick. Knowing what I know now, I definitely would’ve bought Valspar instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for workshop wood floor covering Needed 150 sq ft covered and protected. Since so many online complained about coverage I bought 4 gallons. Turns out I only needed the 2 gallons suggested (each gallon delivering 2 coats of 75 sq ft => 2 gallons covers 150 sq ft in two coats). It is thick, but I had no trouble using a smooth/semi-smooth roller on an aluminum pole.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY Great texturing BUT that’s it! Extremely thick, tried applying it with a roller brush and extender pole. Snapped my pole in half. First coat applied and cured for a week with perfect sunny weather. Second coat applied and cured for 4 days. Today has been a hard drizzle kind of day (first day of precipitation since applying). THE PAINT HAS BUBBLED UP AND IS FILLED WITH WATER. NOT HAPPY AT ALL

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Question Why is it not usable on a garage floor, other than it is extremely thick?
Date published: 2019-02-07
Rated 2 out of 5 by from High Maintenance but Satisfactory If you've never applied this product, read the instructions very carefully before buying it, to make sure you know what you're getting into. It's very thick in the can and hard to brush or roll. A new roller sleeve doesn't absorb well initially. After using even a thick sleeve, it becomes more of a low pile smooth sleeve after a few rolls. It also dries very fast (in a non-ideal way). I lost probably 1/2 a quart of my gallon because it turned to goo on the can, lid, brush, sleeve and edges of the paint tray. It's really thick, like sludge. I'd recommend you buy 25-50% more than you calculated if you're applying outdoors as a result of it's fast drying. I was scraping the can for all I could get out just to get 75% of the 75 sq feet in two coats it says it provides. Just work fast, plan ahead. I don't know if there's really a better alternative product, and now that it's done, it looks as I expected. Thus I'd still recommend it.

Preparation

The following steps and products are required.

  • For failing coatings or to remove loose wood fibers, use a product such as KILZ® Wood Stain & Finish Stripper followed by KILZ® Wood Cleaner & Brightener to neutralize the wood.

  • When KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper is not needed, a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener MUST be used to properly prepare and clean existing or new wood surfaces.

  • After using either KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper or KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer.

  • When rinsing with a pressure washer, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24" away from the surface. • Allow the area to dry at least 24 hours before coating. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz.

Application

  • DO NOT DILUTE. Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. Stir product occasionally throughout application.

  • For best results, apply when air and surface temperatures are between 50-90°F. During application, avoid exposure of container to direct sunlight. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours. Avoid painting if humidity is expected to be greater than 80%.

  • For nail holes and cracks up to 6 mm (1/4"), completely fill in with KILZ OVER ARMOR Textured Coating using a nylon/ polyester brush and allow to dry prior to rolling. Deep nail holes and cracks may require additional filling.

  • For edges, corners and in between wood boards, apply using a nylon/polyester brush. Use pressure while rolling and apply a generous, even coat using a 1/2" nap roller. For a smoother texture, use a brush or thinner nap roller (i.e. 1/4").

  • For vertical wood application such as such as railings, use a nylon/polyester brush or roller and apply two thin coats at a spread rate of 400 sq. ft. per gallon.

  • Do not use with airless sprayer. Maintain a wet edge when applying.

  • A SECOND COAT MUST BE APPLIED for optimum performance, film uniformity, leveling and to cover cracks.

Dry Time

  • Wait 4-6 hours before recoating. Dries to touch in 4 hours. Wait 24-48 hours before light foot traffic. 72 hours for full cure. Additional dry time may be needed in cooler temperatures and higher humidity. Premature heavy traffic will cause coating failure.

Clean up & Disposal

  • Clean equipment and paint spatters with warm, soapy water. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent. Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused product in accordance with all current governmental regulations.

  • Do not dispose of this product down a drain. Please consider donating any unused product. For recycling or disposal information contact your local household refuse collection service.
