Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hiding I’ve used multiple other primers brands including Kills original and 2. This stuff is worth the extra price if you are trying to prime new sheeting. I used this and Kills 2 on my interior garage bare plywood sheeting. After 2 coats with the kills 3, I could see no bleed though. With the Kills 2 on the same wall and 3 coats, there was still some bleed though. I could not see it until everything dried but afterwards you could defiantly tell where I had used the Kills 2 and Kills 3. If you don’t want to spend all day painting, buy this stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoke stains and smell killed I was so worried after I subleases and found out tenant had been smoking in the bathroom. The walls were stained and yellow and the smell was awful. I did some research and many forums recommended starting with KILZ Premium. I gave it two coats which dried rather fast. And liked as if it gave full coverage. I still went ahead and painted any way and got the most super white walls you would never imagine that smoking ever happened in there. I recommend this product to all my friends now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good coverage for water stains Purchased this to paint ceiling tiles that had water stains (cannot find the same tile pattern to replace them). It took 3 coats but the extreme water stains are now gone. Love the water-base too, so much easier to clean up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage! We had a house fire this year and have redone most of our interior. When we started on our crown molding, I bought a can of the Kilz 3 and I'll never buy another brand. Much thicker and covers much better than the previous primer we had bought. Our crown molding looks stunning and is now one of my favorite features of our home. And it blocked the odor of smoke too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thorough coating I bought Kilz to cover older siding. 1 coat covered thoroughly. I put on a second coat and the neighbors mistook it as being completely painted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got rid of cat urine smell We bought this for a house that we were flipping when we discovered the whole house was full of cat urine. We put this done and it masked the whole house from the awful smell!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great adhesion and coverage! Bought this to prime some dark wooden cabinets. I degreased the cabinets first, but knew there were areas that weren't totally clean. Not only did the Kilz 3 provide a great first coat, but it locked in any leftover grease spots. Not a single one showed through the coats of paint. Will definitely be using this for all future priming needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely inconsistent I purchased 1 gallon from home depot on 9-10 worked great and I was so impressed with 1coat I decided to repaint the entire house not just the living room. Purchased a 5 gallon container on 9-16 from the exact same home depot an entire day spent priming and 3 coats later it's still not able to cover a light yellow. The gallon container covered the exact same color with 1 coat. I wasted money by purchasing the 5 gallon container.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Horrible Packaging To start, I grew up in the painting business. My father ran his own business that I started working in at the age of 12 and until I was 25 when I switched careers. I mention this because I have opened hundreds of paint cans and know what I'm talking about. I grew up using oil based primers of a different brand but decided to use the Kilz 3 Premium to avoid the clean-up of oil based products. I used the Kilz once and the product seems fine. I've always been very meticulous about cleaning the cans lid / rim before I seal it back up to prevent the lid from sticking to the can and any paint residue. I went to use the Kilz yesterday and nearly had to use dynamite to get the lid off, despite the fact that it was clean. I used the standard lid removing tool and had to pry and pry and pry to the point where the lid was bent beyond use. It was like there was some kind of vacuum holding the lid on making it nearly impossible to remove without causing damage to the lid. There was no way I could reseal the can so I had to transfer the Kilz to a plastic 2 gallon bucket that I had to buy from a local hardware store. When inspecting the Kilz can I noticed that the inner lip on the can itself was higher than most paint cans. I don't know if this is what caused the ridiculous seal, but whatever caused it should be changed. I certainly wouldn't want to buy replacement cans every time I buy a Kilz product, but that's what I had to do with my purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Ever! Two coats, a days worth of painting and I literally am so upset! I spent good money on this product that was recommended for my basement project. Only to find out I wasted both my time and money!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from does NOT clean up with water as a primer it was white and covered the wood--- but water and detergent did NOTHING but smear it around as it left a greasy film on every surface-- paint thinner wouldnt dissolve it--- brush cleaner seemed to work some-- also "latex paint remover' by Mostenbocker did get the film off most things and my fingers but the bulk of the pigment beaded into little droplets-that would smear around in a greasy way - it was a serious mess--i just threw my brush away. I have used other Kilz products--this one is very weird. HOT WATER did nothing. it acted like an oil base product with water. why does it say water clean up like a latex product? i dont think its a latex product, but the can doesnt say a word about what the formula really is. if it told me, i could have perhaps figured out what to do. and the 800 phone number on the can is disconnected

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What did I do wrong? I used this primer to refinish a bathroom cabinet. I lightly sanded the surface, applied 2 coats of Kilz Premium Interior/Exterior primer, then 2 coats of paint. The paint is peeling off all the way down to the old wood surface. I ready the instructions carefully, yet the primer seems not to have adhered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing coverage! I have used kilz for every paint project in my house, but my experience with Kilz 3 this week was a first! I used it to prime before giving an old oak table new life with a glossy paint job! A light sanding and one coat blocked all that old golden oak finish, and left me with a beautiful work surface!! On to the cabinets!! Would highly recommend for kitchen projects!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from work on my crafts! I've painted on rocks for years and one of the first steps is to wash and dry them, once dry, I give them a double coat of KILZ Primer. This assures the design will stick and last for a long long time, even if left outside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect exterior primer! This primer covered perfectly in one coat. We had a metal tool shed that was rather large and it say under a tree getting stained green by the tree combined with rust. We decided to move the shed to a new area in the yard. As we took the shed apart and sanded the rust off, we used 4 gallons of KILZ® 3 PREMIUM Interior | Exterior Primer before repainting, the shed looks like it will last a few more decades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great cover up and adhesion! I use this on every jobsite I’m at that requires painting or sealing or coating and Killz 3 premium interior and exterior never lets me down and my finished job always looks a cut above the people before me. This product has been around longer than I’ve been living and I’ve never seen a bad job done with Killz 3. Only jobs I’ve seen that are not up to par are ones where Killz wasn’t used first. So happy Killz exists! Without it I can only imagine

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! (All 10 gallons and counting!) We bought this a few months ago for our new home, which needed paint in every room (all 2,000+ square feet). Some of the rooms had "ghost studs", some had discoloration from wallpaper glue, and one large room had VERY pink walls. This primer covered it all! I definitely needed a second coat with most of those rooms, but I tend to expect that and was very pleased with the outcome. I also liked this because it was low odor and greenguard certified, and the recoat time meant I didn't have to waste an afternoon waiting around. Photos show the before and after of our biggest room.

Surface Preparation*

The following steps are recommended for product performance.

  • All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, grease, wax, polish, mold and mildew, loose peeling paint, rust and all other foreign substances.
  • If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well and allow to dry.
  • Peeling or Checked Paint: Scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface. Sanding or removal of paint containing lead is hazardous.*
  • Glossy Surfaces: For maximum adhesion, scuff sand the surface thoroughly before priming.*
  • Mold or Mildew Covered Surfaces: Wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water and allow to dry before priming.
  • Masonry, Brick, Stucco and Plaster: KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer may be used on clean, dry, aged masonry surfaces. New masonry must be allowed to cure (dry) at least 30 days before applying KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer.
  • Fire Restoration: It is critical to clean damaged surfaces thoroughly before priming. Primer recommendations: KILZ® RESTORATION for water-based (interior); KILZ® ORIGINAL or KILZ® ORIGINAL EXTERIOR for oil-based.

  • Eye protection is recommended. For spray applications, a small amount of water (no more than 1/2 pint per gallon) may be added. Do not thin for stainblocking applications.
  • Only apply if surface, air and product temperatures are between 50°-90°F (10°-32°C). Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Apply using a brush, roller or sprayer.
  • Brush – High quality Nylon/Polyester
  • Roller – High quality 3/8-1/2" nap on smooth surfaces or 1/2-3/4" nap on semi-rough or porous surfaces.
  • Airless spray – .017-.021 tip / 60 mesh filter
  • Prime the entire surface to ensure a uniform appearance of the topcoat.
  • Stainblocking: After priming, test for stain bleed-through by applying the topcoat to a small section. If the stain bleeds through the topcoat, apply a second coat of primer and test again before topcoating the entire area. If bleeding continues, a longer dry time is needed before topcoating.
  • Tinting: KILZ 3® PREMIUM Primer may be tinted with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting to a lighter shade than the topcoat is recommended.
  • Coverage: 300-400 sq. ft. (27.87-37 m2) per gallon depending on application method and surface porosity.

Dry Time at 77°F (25°C), 50% RH

  • Dries to the touch in 30 minutes.

  • Can be recoated or topcoated in one hour with latex or oil-based paint.

  • Application at lower temperatures, in high humidity or in poorly ventilated areas will affect dry time.
