Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Coverage I used this product on a wall that had candle dippingssplatterings. I removed as much of the wax as possible, but there were still obvious spots on the wall. After using this Kilz product my wall looks great & you would never know that it once had candle wax on it. This product is also great for covering up old leak stains as well. I would highly recommend Kilz to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product I needed paint for a railing on a house built in the 1950's. The paint always chips off, rusts and spray paint would bleed through in about 6 months. I used the black primer and it felt like satin. I am very pleased with the results.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from changed formula I used this product before and it did cover stains. Something has happened to the formula as it is now not covering the stains as it once did. Not sure why is is now not working as well as it did two years ago.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good coverage We have a 1910 house and the windows were painted dark brown. We are scraping and painting them white. Kilz original does a good job of the transformation and should last for another 25 years.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not work on bare wood Bought 5 gallons and primed a whole bunch of bare wood per instructions. Home hopeless gave me more pointers. On more than 15 boards the primer failed and the top coat of paint and primer came off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Covered up cat urine from previous owners The house we just bought smelled so strongly of cat urine that we could barely breathe & were getting headaches. Used Kilz in the worst room & it covered it up well. The Kilz was noxious (use a heavy duty mask) even in a we'll ventilated room, but once it dried the smell was undetectable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes painting easier, faster, and more uniform. I bought a ppg paint with primer that’s supposed to be guaranteed single coat. I was painting a concrete fence from dark green to white. In the end, I still had to do 2 coats. Then in the other side of the fence, I tried with kilz primer and a behr paint. This resulted in a more uniform paint that covered the dark green better. And somehow, it also made it easier and faster to paint after a primer.

Surface Preparation

The following steps are recommended for product performance.

  • All surfaces must be clean, free of dust, chalk, oil, mold and mildew, loose peeling paint, rust and all other foreign substances.

  • †Glossy Surfaces: For maximum adhesion, scuff sand the surface thoroughly before priming.
  • Peeling or Checked Paint: Scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface.
  • Mold or Mildew Covered Surfaces: Wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water and allow to dry before priming.
  • Masonry, Brick, Stucco and Plaster: KILZ ORIGINAL INTERIOR/EXTERIOR Primer may be used on clean, dry, aged masonry surfaces that have cured (dried) at least 90 days. If masonry has cured less than 90 days, use KILZ PREMIUM or KILZ 2® Primers.
  • Fire Restoration: It is critical to clean smoke damaged surfaces thoroughly before priming.

  • Tinting: Up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting to a lighter shade than topcoat is recommended.
