New Look, Same Hardworking Formula! KILZ® ADHESION Primer is a water-base, modified-acrylic primer specifically formulated to bond to a variety of ‘tough-to-paint’ surfaces. Its advanced chemistry provides a sound anchor for topcoats while reducing or potentially eliminating the need for sanding dense, glossy surfaces including Kynar®, PVC, vinyl, Formica®, glass, tile, glazed brick, chalky paints, glossy finishes, fiberglass and metals. If using as a primer for epoxies, lacquers, products containing xylene or other hot solvents, allow to dry for 24 hours before topcoating and test for compatibility in an inconspicuous area before full coat application. For use on interior and exterior surfaces. Not recommended for floors or horizontal surfaces subject to prolonged water contact.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked better than expected. Pulled down wainscoting that was put up with liquid nails. This tore a lot of the paper on the drywall. Used this product to "glue" paper edges down before putting on a skim coat. Worked beautifully and you would never suspect the wall damage underneath.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kilz is top notch! Moved into a 40 year old farmhouse. The last person that lived in it was a heavy smoker, so much so that it was dripping off the walls and ceilings when wiped down. The stench was so bad I thought we were going to have to tear down the drywall. After cleaning the walls we decided to try Kilz. You would never know that anybody ever smoked in the house. I will never use anything other than Kilz again! It saved us thousands of dollars!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kilz exterior primer is a $$$$ saver! After going 10 years to long to paint our house, half the siding was crumbling or rotted. Having already invested 5 grand in paint and lumber for decking and fencing, we couldn't afford to replace all the siding. Two 5 gallon buckets of kill primer saved us!! Our house and old cedar sided shop look wonderful. Our house is now the prime real estate of the neighborhood instead of the eye sore. Thanks guys!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love how it will bond to anything! I used this product to paint cheap laminate office furniture and I'm so pleased with the results. I used two coats for extra coverage and durability since it will be used often. I'm really pleased with how well the primer bonded to furniture and can tell it will hold up for years to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent adhesion I used this primer on an old trunk with a plastic finish and it worked perfectly. I primarily used this primer because the surface of my trunk was glossy - it had excellent adhesion and only needed one coat. It went on smoothly - I brushed straight out of the can and had no visible brush strokes. I would use this product again and again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No sanding needed! I like to cut corners anywhere I can, so I was excited to try this new product from KILZ. Recently, I’ve used it on projects that involved glossy and slick laminate surfaces. As promised, I was able to skip the sanding step and get right to painting after applying this primer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Transformed old dark wood paneling This produce was recommended for us to use to paint our old dark cheap wood paneling in our last home. It would have taken us forever if we would have had to sand all the paneling, in our living room and dining room. We didn't have to do that with this product. Just washed all the walls and applied one coat that sealed the paneling well (think it actually helped harden it), and next day was able to paint over it with the tinted-color we wanted. Wow what a difference it made in ease of transforming and brightening our living area and saved us lots of money not having to tear down and replace all the paneling. Five years later we moved and the painted wood paneled walls were still in great shape and washed up well.

Surface Preparation

The following steps are recommended for product performance.

  • All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease, mildew, wax, dust, flaky rust, mill scale, loose paint, chalk and other foreign matter that could interfere with adhesion.

  • If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well and allow to dry.

  • Remove loose rust, peeling paint and mill scale with a scraper, wire brush or sandpaper.

  • Clean bare metal in accordance with SPC (The Society for Protective Coatings) specifications for the proper surface preparation of metal surfaces.

  • Peeling or Checked Paint: Scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface. Sanding or removal of paint containing lead is hazardous.

  • Mold or Mildew Covered Surfaces: Wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water and allow to dry before priming.

  • While KILZ ADHESION Primer is formulated to bond without sanding, it is recommended that a small area be tested for adhesion prior to beginning the job.
