Interior | Exterior Primer

New Look, Same Hardworking Formula! KILZ® ADHESION Primer is a water-base, modified-acrylic primer specifically formulated to bond to a variety of ‘tough-to-paint’ surfaces. Its advanced chemistry provides a sound anchor for topcoats while reducing or potentially eliminating the need for sanding dense, glossy surfaces including Kynar®, PVC, vinyl, Formica®, glass, tile, glazed brick, chalky paints, glossy finishes, fiberglass and metals. If using as a primer for epoxies, lacquers, products containing xylene or other hot solvents, allow to dry for 24 hours before topcoating and test for compatibility in an inconspicuous area before full coat application. For use on interior and exterior surfaces. Not recommended for floors or horizontal surfaces subject to prolonged water contact.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covers tile I bought this primer to cover my ugly avocado green tiles in my bathroom. It took two coats, but it covered the tile and grout 100%. Then I was able to paint the tile and it looks amazing! I also primed my maple wood cabinets and then painted them this amazing grey.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use this product! I needed to repaint my front door, but wasn't sure why type of paint the previous owner used - latex or oil based. By using this primer, I was able to prime the front door for my latex paint. It worked beautifully!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome product!!! I bought this to paint my outdated laminated kitchen cupboards and other difficult surfaces. It has really great coverage and dries to a hard protective coating. One thing I discovered about it and don't remember it being mentioned in the description, is that you can sand out minor drips etc. This makes it extra valuable as a primer in my opinion! The durability, coverage, and quality of this product is amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Upcycler's Dream! If you live by reduce*recycle*reuse, this is the product for you. I love that its water-based and can be used as both an interior and exterior primer. I like to use a variety of materials for non-standard uses. My workload is reduced to light sanding before applying KILZ ADHESION followed by a coating of high quality paint 24-36 hours later. You'll be thrilled with the results!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for damaged wall When we moved into our house, our basement walls had some water damage from a leak. After a thorough scrubbing and cleaning, we used Kilz to seal in the stains and odor before painting. We applied 2 coats and the paint went on smoothly afterward with no indication that there had ever been damage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage! I wanted to paint a wood-look 1970s laminate cabinet and the lady in the paint department suggested that I prime with this first so that the finish coat would adhere best. I am very pleased with the results. I previously painted another cabinet using the regular primer and the paint scratched off easily. The paint does not peel or scratch on the cabinet that was painted with Kilz Adhesion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When the going is tough, this gets the job going! A great choice when you have a tough situation to deal with - such as glossy paint, metal, or other surfaces. It goes on easily and smoothly with brush or roller. It was perfect for my basement DIY reno job, which had glossy paint on the ceiling, and new drywall mixed in with some existing drywall on the walls. (I gave it all just a very light once over with a sander hooked to a shop vac before priming it all with this.) A nice plus is that the paint layer you put on next went on smoother and easier than with regular primers I've worked with in the past. It's more expensive than most primers, but if you count your time and the value of a nice result, it's worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seriously adheres to anything I had wainscoting that had a high gloss over yellow stain. I wanted to paint it white, but that would be a lot of sanding. One coat of this kill and my paint covered it with the normal 2 coats. So simple.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product performs as advertised! Kilz Adhesion has done a superior job of sealing the wall and provides a great surface for paint application. Did wonders for older wallboard after wall paper removal. We were not sure our paint would adhere to the old abused wall surfaces but so far so good. I the end it saved us a lot of work and looks great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product solved my problem of painting glossy surfaces. I had a job to paint 40 residential doors. They were old varnished wood doors. I was looking for an alternative to sanding them all and came across Kilz Adhesion. It allows me to prime the slick, glossy surfaces and the paint covered beautifully. Worked great! I highly recommend this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect solution for painting over glossy finishes. The former owners of my home had painted over high gloss trim which resulted in peeling. After scraping, repainting and applying Kilz Adhesion my living room looks fantastic! I am currently using it on the trim and ceiling in my newly remodeled kitchen. Great product! I have recommended it to anyone who mentions needing to paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really helps paint adhere to slick surfaces! I used Kilz Adhesion Bonding Primer as a base coat to prepare my wood paneled walls for painting. Rated 5 out of 5 by from OLD kitchen table redo Read the reviews and ordered this as it is not available locally---and am so very happy with the results! I did the table frame first and inlaid mosaic tile and then "distressed" the table to get the results I wanted. This kilz has saved me so much time sanding and worrying about the finish!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent I have a table that has some kind of coating on it, pretty thick, it would take a very long time to sand it down even with and electric sander to get to the wood. So, I went to the Kilz website, and was looking at the products when I saw adhesion, and the description, perfect for what I needed. Fast forward a month or to, I finally get around to redoing my table, I did sand it slightly , even though description states it's not needed. Applies the Kilz adhesion, waited, the specified amount of time to apply the paint, absolutely worked like a charm. It covered it perfectly paint adhered to it with no problems. Now it's only been a few months since the Kilz and paint have been applied so I can't say how it will hold up, I can't imagine it not. would highly reccomend on projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bonds to anything! I have used this product many times and it always amazes me what a great product it is. There is a lot of old paneling in our house and instead of having to pull it out and drywall I use Adhesions primer and it never scratches off. The most money saving project I used it on was old laminate cupboards. They are not intended to be painted but this primer made it possible. I did have to lightly sand the area around the handles due to oil and dirt from opening them but they held up great and saved a ton of money on new cabinets!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing product! Before I tried Kilz Adhesion I tried the one primer all the "pros" told me to use and I will have "great success". Well after sanding, priming, wiping down and painting 5 of the 100 doors ( which were previously painted with oil based gloss). I gave the paint job 3 days to dry and gave it the thumbnail scratch test. Imagine my horror when paint and primer came off because the primer didn't stick! So I returned to my paint store and didn't ask any questions just to "Please shake one can of Kilz Adhesion primer." After following the directions as to applying the primer, I was so relieved that the primer stuck like... Just amazing, and the top coat looks fabulous on top of it!

Surface Preparation

The following steps are recommended for product performance.

  • All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease, mildew, wax, dust, flaky rust, mill scale, loose paint, chalk and other foreign matter that could interfere with adhesion.

  • If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute, rinse well and allow to dry.

  • Remove loose rust, peeling paint and mill scale with a scraper, wire brush or sandpaper.

  • Clean bare metal in accordance with SPC (The Society for Protective Coatings) specifications for the proper surface preparation of metal surfaces.

  • Peeling or Checked Paint: Scrape off loose paint and sand to a smooth surface. Sanding or removal of paint containing lead is hazardous.

  • Mold or Mildew Covered Surfaces: Wash the area with a mildew remover, rinse with water and allow to dry before priming.

  • While KILZ ADHESION Primer is formulated to bond without sanding, it is recommended that a small area be tested for adhesion prior to beginning the job.
