Preparation

The following steps and products are required.

  • All surfaces must be clean, sound, dry and free of any dirt, oil and grease.

  • Scuff sand any glossy surfaces. If making repairs, use stainless steel or galvanized nails to prevent nail staining. Countersink nail heads, repair imperfections and sand smooth. Remove all dust with a damp cloth, allow to dry.

  • New and Weathered Wood: Use a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener to open wood pores for better penetration and remove any mill glaze and mildew stains. Remove remaining wood fibers and debris by sanding lightly.

  • Painted Wood Surfaces: To strip previous coating, use a product such as KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper. Then clean and neutralize with a product such as KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener.

  • After using KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener or KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or pressure washer. When rinsing with a pressure washer, use the broadest spray pattern while keeping the nozzle at least 24" away from the surface. Allow the area to dry at least 24 hours before coating. Lightly sand to remove remaining wood fibers/fuzz.

Application

  • Must apply between 40-90˚F. Do not use if rain is expected within 24 hours.

  • The wood surface must be completely dry before application.

  • Avoid applying in direct sunlight or to hot surfaces. DO NOT DILUTE. Intermix multiple containers to ensure color uniformity. Stir product occasionally throughout application. Use a 3/8" nap roller, nylon/polyester brush, pad applicator or airless sprayer.

  • Airless spray is recommended for experienced applicators only; use a .015"-.019" tip (60 mesh filter for airless spray recommended). If thinning is required, thin with water at a rate of no more than 1/2 pint per gallon.

  • Maintain a wet edge when applying. Always back-brush and apply product end to end or to board lengths to prevent lap marks.

  • Over application of stain will lead to surface failure including peeling and cracking. Avoid applying stain too heavily. Two thin coats recommended. For optimum performance, coat all accessible sides.

  • COVERAGE: 1st Coat 250-300 Sq. Ft.; 2nd Coat 500-600 Sq. ft.
