KILZ® Wood Cleaner & Brightener

KILZ® Wood Cleaner & Brightener is formulated to clean, brighten and condition exterior wood surfaces prior to applying natural finishes, paints or stains. This product will remove exterior stains caused by mold, mildew, algae and fungus as well as household stains such as BBQ sauce, ketchup, wine, etc. Removes mill glaze on new wood. After application of KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper use KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener to neutralize the stripper, restore the natural wood colour, and condition the surface prior to applying a stain or finish. This product is ideal for use on Exterior Wood and Composites, Decks, Siding, Shakes, Shingles, Fences and Patio Furniture.

The following steps and products are required.

  • Be sure to have a source for water, hose with nozzle and stiff bristle broom or brush. Wear goggles and acid resistant clothing, boots and gloves. Always use KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener after application of KILZ Wood Stain & Finish Stripper.

  • Prevent all rinse solution from entering storm drains.


  • DO NOT MIX IN METAL CONTAINER. Mix only in plastic containers large enough to hold up to 7.6 L of diluted solution. Dilute 1 part of product with 1 part water (1:1 dilution) in a clean plastic container.

  • For removal of rust, tannin bleed, red clay stains and for extremely hard to clean weathered wood surfaces, use product at full strength.

  • NOTICE: Do not mix KILZ Wood Cleaner & Brightener with chlorine bleach or with any other household or industrial cleaning product or detergent.


  • For best results, apply when air and surface temperatures are between 5-32°C.

  • Shake well before use. Conduct a small test patch in an inconspicuous area to ensure product performance.

  • Wet surfaces with water prior to cleaning. Apply solution liberally with a pump sprayer, brush, mop or roller. Keep the surface completely wet with solution for 10-15 minutes.

  • Scrub surface using a stiff bristle broom or brush. The solution will foam. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with water at normal pressure, or use a pressure washer at low setting (500-1200 PSI).

  • DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE as this may harm the wood. Surfaces other than wood may be dulled if not rinsed off quickly.

  • After surface is dry, lightly sand any loose wood fibers with medium grit sand paper. Sweep away dust before coating.

  • COVERAGE: Full Strength 19 m²  Diluted 37 m².

WARNING! Sanding or scraping pressure treated lumber may be hazardous; wear appropriate protection.

Clean-Up & Disposal

  • Clean equipment with warm, soapy water. If spilled, contain material and remove with an inert absorbent. Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused product in accordance with all current governmental regulations.

  • Do not dispose of this product down a drain. For recycling or disposal information contact your local household refuse collection service.

Cautions / Limitations

  • Protect from freezing.

  • For best results, apply at temperatures between  4.5°C - 32°C. Temperatures above 32°C may affect the application such as drying too fast. Avoid applying in direct sun. NOTE: If the surface is hot to the touch it should be considered too hot to apply this coating.

  • Avoid heavy traffic for 24 hours.

  • CAUTION: Surfaces may become slippery when wet. Use caution when walking on surface when moisture is present.

  • Allow two weeks before washing or cleaning for full cure.

  • Shelf life under normal conditions is two years unopened.
